Excited Children in Science Class

STEM Activities

Greece

The Roller Coaster Challenge

Students built a roller coaster with paper through which a glass marble can travel and  learn about the different forms of energy.

The egg drop challenge

Students took the idea of their peers from Sweden. Students had the mission to feed a little dinosaur with an egg. A plane would throw the egg from above and students had to make a construction which would prevent the egg from crashing.

The Catapult Challenge

Students create a machine with which to throw an object afar and learn the different forms of kinetic and potential energy. They work in groups of three.

SYSTEM THE PLANET

Students watch videos and discuss about the pollution in earth. They create a digital wall (padlet) in Greek language with messages about the recycle and they share online.

Prisms and Cylinders

Students use cardboard to make rectangular and triangular prisms and cylinders, learn about their properties and find out which of them can support the bigger pile of books.

Presentation about LTTAS

We presented the activites carried out during the Learning, Training and Teaching Activities (LTTAS).

Inquiry based method and problem solving in Math

In Mathematics students learn and understand better through the inquiry based method, problem solving, error management, etc. Also using various materials they interact with each other and discover algebraic or geometric formulas on their own. An example is the use of geoboard in geometry. Students worked in groups and, following instructions, discovered and formulated on their own the  mathematical type for finding the area of a right triangle.

Online teachers’ education in Science

Teachers from our school attended the educational online meeting for teachers:

Using in teaching the “elefys” the interactive online dictionary for Science. Dr Ioannis Lefkos, Phd in Science and ICT, from University of Macedonia and Dr Chrysoula Dourou, Phd in Linguistics, from Democritus University of Thrace introduced the interactive science dictionary “ELEFYS” and showed teachers how to use it in teaching Science. 1st Experimental Primary School of Alexandroupolis

Science activities at our school.

The BoomTown

The pupils of 5th Grade with the use of Lego Spike Prime created their own city and their own model that shows how a cargo is classified and it is transported to its destination. The project lasted 3 months, April to May. Pupils were divided in groups and each student

took a role in it: leader, lego finder, constructor, tool manager, programmer. At the end of the project pupils disseminated their work to our school and online to other schools.

Athens STEM Days

Students of 6th Grade traveled in Athens in 1st of March. They had three days to visit Planetarium, the Observatory and Science Museum. They learnt about many scientific discoveries of the Ancient Greeks, about the famous Antikythera mechanism, about space.

Art and Mathematics

The 5th grade students visited the Historical Museum of  Alexandroupoli and attended the Art and Mathematics project. They discovered geometric shapes and mathematical properties in painting as well as the relationship between music and mathematics. At the end they played games, solved crosswords and created their own city out of geometric shapes.
